A Film Legend – Akira Kurosawa - Ran
My Alien Leader
invited me over to watch The Exorcist yesterday.
Yes, I was
terrified, but it made me realize…
I haven’t really
watched a good movie since I got here…
Yes, I’ve
watched Despicable Me 2, 3 Idiots and The Exorcist,
But the film I
really miss is Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran”.
(“Ran” means “Chaos” in Japanese)
According to The
Guardian, “Ran” is the no.12 best action and war film of all time.
Ran is an
adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear”,
But instead of 3
daughters, there are 3 sons whom he has given authority over his lands.
Thinking that
his 3rd son didn’t love him because he didn’t have a sweet mouth
like his brothers,
The King exiled
him.
Only to find
that his 2 other sons started plotting against each other for land and title,
and abandoned him during his times of need.
It’s a sad
ending as his 3rd son came to his rescue,
Only to die in
battle just minutes after reuniting with his father.
And the
heartbroken king died soon after.
The Los Angeles
Times gave a highly positive review of this film,
saying, “They don't make them like Akira Kurosawa's
magisterial "Ran" anymore, but the truth is, they didn't really make
them like this regal epic back then either.”
“Ran”.
I highly
recommend it.
