Living La Vida Smartly
Of the two months I've been living here,
I
realised
that I have spent quite a lot on
unnecessary things,
things that I shouldn't have spent on in the first place.
Otherwise, I could
have saved an extra 100 pounds on
other fun stuff.
What I realised was, do not get over-excited.
In the sense that, do not invest everything in one supermarket.
The first thing you need to do is to be
geographically familiar with the place you're living in.
Have a walk around your place to see what stores or
supermarkets are available and the type of food they provide.
Here's an important tip:
Note down the
prices of items that you will potentially buy, especially food!
Although it
might sound a little bit like behaving like an auntie,
but collecting
brochures in supermarkets is extremely helpful in budget
planning.
I realised that Aldi is one of the most
economic places to shop for food.
Every once in a while,
Aldi has brochures regarding food discounts and promotions so I can plan what food to buy with the money that I'm about to spend on.
Aldi Supermarket in Sheffield
Quality wise, Sainsbury
could be a place for reasonable and quality food,
especially red meat and seafood;
however, different branches has different range of food.
My
favourite Sainsbury branches is
the one located at
The Moors Street because their salmon is fresh and they also have
a wide range of items.
Waitrose supermarket is not recommended for
students as
their price is slightly over the top but on the bright side, they have quality food.
Sainsbury Supermarket
Other than commercial supermarkets,
Sheffield has a wet market called Castle market. Like any regular
wet market,
there are tons of stalls selling products from food to
clothes.
One thing to bear in mind is that do not touch their food unless you
want to buy it.
It is considered rude to do so as they
think you are doing no good but only destroying
their product.
Hence, if the price is set, do not argue or ask for discount,
I
don’t know why but this is their culture.
Castle market in sheffield
For peeps who are
coming to the UK next year,
PLEASE bring your own
necessary cooking utensils like pots and
woks so you don’t have to buy it in the UK as it is not cheap as well,
although you might be told cooking
utensils are provided but actually,
they are in bad quality
and you might want to buy a new one after using it one month later.
Other
personal items such as floor rug, bed sheets and
clothes hangers are recommended for
bringing over as well.
You might think they are just very cheap items but if everything accumulates together,
it will cost you around £40-£60.
Why not take that money and spend it on a nice and splendid meal?
